All fall down (1994, rev. 2008)

Holt, S. (2008) All fall down (1994, rev. 2008). [Composition]

Abstract

For mixed sextet: clarinet (Eb doubling Bb bass), horn, piano, violin, viola and violoncello, duration 9 minutes. This piece was originally composed in 1994, revised in 2008 and published in 2015. It was premiered on 26 February 1994 by the Nash Ensemble, at the Purcell Room, London. "The title stems from the well-known plague rhyme: / Ring a, ring a roses; / A pocketful of posies, / Ashes, Ashes, all fall down. / This title seemed appropriate when writing the piece – in fact I can’t imagine it having any other, but I’m still not entirely sure why. It's dedicated to my friend and tutor, Tony Gilbert on his 60th birthday and to his partner Raymonde Sassoon, with much affection." - Simon Holt.
