Abstract

For mixed chamber ensemble, 16 players. Duration: 11 minutes and 30 seconds. "In June 2012 I found myself in hospital. I lay there for five weeks – alone, in an isolation room and with virtually no other stimulation apart from reading: No music, no radio and no TV. This personal stillness however was subject to constant and irregular interruption, from nurses, cleaners, phlebotomists and, of course, consultants. / This music isn’t in any way about that experience. But something of the contrast between those bursts of frantic activity and my own near complete physical (and spiritual) inertia has perhaps somehow gifted its shape. A flow is repeatedly compromised, and on a range of levels. When activity does resume one might reasonably question both its aim and its purpose. / Correntandemente (the word is entirely invented – a quasi-Italian neologism which probably wouldn’t translate) is scored for sixteen players and might perhaps last for around 11 minutes." © William Mival
