Abstract

For string quartet, duration 15 minutes. Commissioned jointly by the Royal Philharmonic Society and the BBC as part of Radio 3's New Generation Artists Scheme, this piece was first performed on 2 July 2001 by the Belcea Quartet at the Cheltenham Music Festival. Subsequent performances have been given by the Tippett Quartet, Ensemble Antipodes, the Matangi Quartet, the Brodowski String Quartet, Callisto Ensemble, and the Volta String Quartet. This piece won the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award for Chamber-scale Composition 2002 and is Part 2 of the cycle 'A ribbon of time' which uses the poetry of Emily Dickinson as its starting point.
