Abstract

For chamber ensemble: piccolo (doubling flute), clarinet in A (doubling bass clarinet), horn in F, piano, viola, cello, and double bass, duration 12 minutes. This work is inspired by the poem Sorpresa by Federico García Lorca and was commissioned by the Royal Institute of British Architects. It was premiered on 24 May 1984 at BBC Portland Place Concert Hall by the Nash Ensemble conducted by Lionel Friend. It has since been performed by Psappha, the Paragon Ensemble, the Philharmonia Orchestra, Music Harvest Sinfonietta, TAIMAgranada, Orquesta de Alumnos de Musikene, and Stipendiaten der IEMA.
