Flux

Kay, A. (2006) Flux. [Composition]

Abstract

For ensemble (bass clarinet, cello, flute, piano, piccolo, and violin), duration 12 minutes. Flux was first published by BMIC New Voices and remains part of their collection. It was commissioned by New Music Players and premiered by them on 1 November 2006 at The Warehouse, London. A recording of this performance is available (via YouTube) on the video tab below. Flux was also broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on 3 May 2008. Composer's programme note: "Flux is a fluid work with constantly changing shapes surfaces and energy. Although the physical character of the music varies widely, the raw material all stems from the same source that includes particular cells to fuse surfaces together. The work is an exploration of the sensation of physical movement in music, role-play and resonance both real and illusionary. A single line initiates enforces and resonates a series of dynamic, textural, harmonic, timbral, rhythmic and melodic structures that move in time and space with varying speeds. The line moves through and across the shapes, sliding between foreground and background."
