Surcos

Holt, S. (2016) Surcos. [Composition]

Abstract

For orchestra, duration 8 minutes. This piece was first performed at the Philharmonie, Berlin on 5 May 2017 by the Berliner Philharmoniker, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. "'Surcos' is for a classical sized orchestra of double wind (plus their respective doublings), small brass section, two percussionists plus timpani, harp and strings. The title is Spanish for furrows and is derived from a poem by Antonio Machado which I discovered on a bronze plaque when walking along the walkway at the edge of Baeza in southern Spain where Machado moved after his first wife died. New beginnings? New seeds sown? The piece could become a companion piece for the 6’30" 'An icicle of moon', a piece I wrote just over a year ago for similar forces. ’Surcos’ is just over 8'." © Simon Holt
