Turnage, M.-A. (1990) Kai. [Composition]

Abstract

For solo cello and ensemble, duration 20 minutes. This work was composed in memory of Kai Scheffler, principal cellist and a founder member of the Ensemble Modern in Germany. It was written for the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group as 'Composer in Association with the CBSO', with funds provided by the Radcliffe Trust. The premiere was given on 18 December 1990 by Ulrich Heinen (cello) and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group conducted by Simon Rattle at Adrian Boult Hall. This work was recorded by the same musicians in 1993 (EMI Classics, 724355509123) and is now available on 'British Composers: A Celebration' (Warner Classics, 0954802), see https://www.prestomusic.com/classical/products/7996180--british-composers-a-celebration.
