Dancechase (2011, rev. 2012 and 2015)

Kittos, H. (2015) Dancechase (2011, rev. 2012 and 2015). [Composition]

Abstract

For quintet (flute, bass clarinet, piano, violin, cello), duration 8 minutes. Dancechase was inspired by the movie Pina by Wim Wenders, which is a tribute to the late choreographer Pina Bausch, conveying the power of her ideas and style in combination with her love for movement and a deep sense of drama and humanity. The idea behind this piece is that the different instruments of the ensemble are acting as theatrical characters, shaped by what defines them: timbre, shape, volume, size etc. Such 'characters' form groups and interact or antagonise with each other in constant pulse and movement, as if they are dancing and chasing each other at the same time. This means that the piece has a light, playful, grazioso style which carries an interactive, often antagonistic element with frenetic tendencies that contribute to a dramatic build-up. Dancechase was first composed for dissonArt and was premiered at the Music Village 2011 under the direction of Beat Furrer, 23 August 2011, Pelion, Greece.
