Abstract

For soprano and piano, duration 18 minutes. This work was commissioned by Leeds Lieder+ 2007 with funds partly provided by the RVW Trust. It was premiered on 14 October 2007 at Leeds Lieder+ by Elizabeth Watts (soprano) and Gary Matthewman (piano). The song cycle is made up of six songs in four sections, and the text is taken from a collection of Chinese poetry from the 8th and 9th centuries: I) Traveling Moon; II) Enjoying Pine and Bamboo; III) Three Commentaries: A Song of the Palace - The Philosopher - The Red Cockatoo; IV) Sitting Idle at the North Window.
