Abstract

A workshop and performance exploring the little known English songs written by Karl Rankl (1898 - 1968) during World War II in Oxford. A Schönberg pupil and friend of Hanns Eisler, Rankl became the first music director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden after the war. Norbert Meyn (Royal College of Music) and Joseph Breinl (Kunstuniversitaet Graz) explored Rankl's songs in this workshop with singers and pianists from the RCM and Ensemble Émigré, culminating in an informal concert of selected songs. This workshop took place at the Austrian Cultural Forum, London, in October 2017.
