Sparrow night

Holt, S. (1989) Sparrow night. [Composition]

Abstract

For solo oboe and chamber ensemble, duration 17 minutes. The ensemble consists of flute (doubling piccolo), clarinet in Bb (doubling Eb clarinet and bass clarinet), horn in F, piano, violin, viola, cello, and double bass. The title stems from a Chekov story cited by Raymond Carver in his final book of poetry, where terrible nights with thunder, rain, and wind are called by some people 'sparrow nights.' This piece was commissioned by the Nash Ensemble and has been recorded by them on NMC Recordings (NMC D008): https://nmc-recordings.myshopify.com/products/simon-holt-era-madrugada. This recording is now available on YouTube, see the video tab below.
