For large orchestra, duration 15 minutes. This work was commissioned by the Feeney Trust for Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. It was premiered on 5 October 1989 by the CBSO conducted by Simon Rattle at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, and has since been performed by major orchestras all over the world.
