Tirlun

Bowden, M. (2008) Tirlun. [Composition]

Abstract

For orchestra, duration c.8.5 minutes. This work was commissioned by the BBC for the Ulster Orchestra. The premiere was given by the Ulster Orchestra, conducted by David Hill, at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh, on 22 August 2008. The Welsh word ‘tirlun’ refers both to landscape and our relationship to our surroundings. It is a place where we feel we belong; more than simply dramatic scenery – it is an area where a community has lived with whom we identify. The bond between person and place is rooted in landscape – dialects connect us to different environments of land, sea and weather. Land and language are two strands that tie people to places, creating an interlinked quilt of landscapes where people have lived and dreamed, worked and suffered.
