Kittos, H. (2016) ADRIFT. [Composition]

Abstract

ADRIFT is an installation piece for choir, commissioned by InTRANSIT Festival for Refugee Week by the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington, London, in June 2016. It was composed with Lillie Harris and Dan McBride. The world premiere was given on 20th June 2016 by ‘Sing to Live, Live to Sing’ Community Choir in the tunnel under Exhibition Road that connects South Kensington Underground Station with the V&A, Natural History Museum, and Science Museum. The aim of the piece is to raise awareness for the 2015-16 refugee crisis in the EU. The main idea is a symbolic journey-walk of the choir, while performing the piece that uses a text written by Holocaust survivor Primo Levi. For the first performance, the walk took place between four pre-designated points in the tunnel. These points served as ‘stops’, where the choir performed different material between one-minute silences that served as tributes to the victims of the refugee crisis.
