Abstract

In an earlier article in this journal, 'The chalumeau: independent voice or poor relation?' I used musical examples from a variety of sources to illustrate the historical significance of the instrument. The present article is the first of two that will investigate in detail the use of the chalumeau in Germany by Telemann and Graupner, whose prolific contributions to the repertoire have been consistently underestimated by commentators, among them Kroll and Becker.
