Abstract

A study course with Norbert Meyn, Cathy Heller-Jones and musicians from Ensemble Émigré, tracing Jewish connections and intercultural mobility in the art of Lieder. Incorporating live performance, this study course explored the role of Jewish figures in the development of the art of Lieder. Each session focused on a small group of composers from a particular period, beginning with Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn, going on to Mahler, Zemlinski and Schönberg, Kurt Weill, Hanns Eisler, Robert Kahn and composers like Hans Gál and Karl Rankl, who emigrated to Britain from Germany and Austria and continued the tradition by setting English poetry to their music. The course examined how their creativity and professional careers were affected by the political, social and religious climate of their time. Sessions were held on 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th November, 2018 at the Liberal Jewish Synagogue, London, and the series was part of B'nai B'rith UK's European Days of Jewish Culture & Heritage.
