Abstract
Performance psychology is commonly employed within sport to facilitate skill development and training, yet its implications and applications are by no means limited to this one area of performance. This chapter begins by discussing functions of applied performance psychology across a range of diverse domains. Next, the relevance of performance psychology to the development of performance excellence is considered. A research program recently conducted within music that sought to develop and evaluate an ecologically appropriate performance psychology program is presented to facilitate discussion of the wide ranging and powerful implications of applied performance psychology for human performance in general. Concepts of relevance to the implementation of performance psychology to performers that are worth bearing in mind by researchers and practitioners wishing to create and deliver applied performance psychology programs are also discussed. Finally, recommendations to support the ongoing development of the field of applied performance psychology are offered.
